The taxi industry in KwaZulu-Natal says it is shocked with the killing of yet another taxi boss in the province.

Sibusiso Nkomonde was gunned down in Newcastle in northern KwaZulu-Natal. Last week, another taxi boss who was a deputy chairperson of the Klipriver Taxi Association was also shot dead in Ladysmith.

Three of his bodyguards were killed in the shooting and their vehicle lost control and collided with another vehicle killing four teachers on their way to school. It’s believed that the killing is related to a feud over a lucrative route between the KwaZulu-Natal midlands to Johannesburg.

Chairperson of the Amajuba Regional Taxi Council, Dumisani Ntuli, says the killing follows the meeting held on Friday to defuse the conflict between the provincial Transport Department, SANTACO and the taxi owners operating on this route.
