Taxi operators to protest in Pretoria on Wednesday

Taxi commuters have been advised to seek alternative transport on Wednesday.

The National Taxi Alliance (NTA) has announced that it will hold a protest march to the Ministry of Transport and the Union Buildings in Pretoria.

They accuse the Transport Ministry of failing to address their long-standing concerns.

This includes the controversial Taxi Recapitalisation programme, delayed issuing of operating permits and the exclusion of the taxi industry from receiving public passenger transport subsidies.

More than 10 000 taxi operators are expected to participate in the protest.

NTA general secretary Alpheus Mlalazi says: “We trust that the commuters and the public will appreciate that the NTA spared no effort in trying to avoid embarking on a protest march.”

“We will undoubtedly inconvenience commuters and we take this opportunity to apologise to our customers and others who will be directly and indirectly affected by our decision to march, which is beyond our control,” adds Mlalazi.
