Tawana Kupe on media’s licence to broadcast Pistorius trial

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Professor Tawana Kupe, Head of the Faculty of Humanities at Wits University, says a human being died in tragic circumstances, lives were shattered, including that of Oscar Pistorius, whether he’s guilty or not.

Kupe says where there is murder, public interest and emotions, it’s good for the public to know what happened. He adds: “For members of the public to be schooled about the law is a major public benefit.”

He says the downside to having the Pistorius murder trial televised is that there is a degree of voyeurism, where people are interested in details about Oscar’s private life in ways that don’t improve anyone’s understanding.

He goes on to say: “Another downside could be that some witnesses are not used to cameras and not comfortable answering questions exposed to the whole world.” – Edited by Tshepo Tsheole
