OR Tambo bomb scare may have snowball effect

Reading Time: < 1 minute

A bomb scare at OR Tambo International Airport this Monday morning may have a snowball effect, causing flight delays later in the day.

The section near the International Arrivals Hall was evacuated after unattended luggage was spotted in the area.

The canine unit and Police were called in to do a sweep of the area.

Police say the luggage contained clothing and what looked like batteries. This has been sent for forensic evaluation.

Airport spokesperson Leigh Gunkel-Kuiler says, “As airport management of OR Tambo International Airport, we can now confirm that we are back online. And we’re now operating normal. What we’d like to tell the South African public and passengers and airport users (is) that given what transpired this morning, we are anticipating that there may be some flight delays.”

“We’d like to thank the South African public and passengers for their patience and co-operation in this regard. And we’d like to apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused,” adds Gunkel-Kuiler.
