Friday marks the 7th anniversary of the 2012 Marikana tragedy. Thirty four mine workers were shot and killed by police during a protracted wage strike on August 16 at the then Lonmin operations, now owned by Sibanye-Stillwater.

South Africa’s labour court has rejected a request by the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) to hold an industry-wide strike covering the platinum and gold sectors, Anglogold Ashanti, Anglo American Platinum and Lonmin.
