North West DA leader wants main opposition spot

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The Democratic Alliance in North West has re-elected Joe McGluwa as its leader at the party’s provincial elective congress in Klerksdorp.

McGluwa says they will work hard to become the main opposition party in the provincial legislature.

“The DA was never being replaced. The DA was never being the opposition. We are working hard towards that. It was only unfortunate at the time when we reached our peak, it was then when the EFF actually came into the whole picture. But what we are saying is, we are an alternative government. Anyone can come to the legislature, you will see our attendance and you will also see our role that we are playing.”

Meanwhile, DA leader Mmusi Maimane says he doubts whether the ANC’s national elective conference this month will be run without incident.

He was addressing his party’s provincial elective congress at Klerksdorp in the North West Saturday.

Maimane says there’s a possibility that lawlessness will characterise the conference, as the ANC’s own members have been taking the party to court, questioning the outcomes of provincial and regional conferences.
