Gordhan praises new Eskom CEO

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan says the newly-appointed Eskom CEO Phakamani Hadebe made important advances at the power utility while he was in an acting capacity.

Announcing sweeping changes at the boards of State-Owned Enterprises, Gordhan confirmed Hadebe’s permanent appointment – saying his  experience at National Treasury made him a favourable candidate.

Hadebe was initially appointed in January for three months, pending a permanent appointment. Gordhan says the position of the Eskom CFO is under consideration and an announcement will be made soon.

“Mr Hadebe and CFO, the board had a set of names, initially there were I think over 200 applicants, they then interviewed people and they then came up with the suggestion which we have just announced. The CFO position is still under consideration by the Eskom board, Does Eskom have the leeway to do what it wants to do? I think remember that Eskom is an implementer of policy that is developed by the Department of Energy and adopted by government. Eskom will then look at what it does and what its role is and the board will then determine how to implement the decisions that government makes.”
