ANC MP Dirks in hot water over offensive gestures

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The Commission for Gender Equality has called on ANC Member of Parliament, Mervyn Dirks, to resign if the allegations of misconduct and aggression towards colleagues are true.

It is alleged that Dirks made threatening and offensive gestures to one of his female colleagues, insulting her and threatening to assault her during Thursday’s sitting of the House.

The colleague has since been identified as  ANC Member of Parliament Thozama Mantashe.

The commission’s spokesperson, Javu Baloyi, says such behaviour cannot be tolerated.

“We want him to do the honourable thing and resign from his position like we have done before, calling for Manana to resign from his position. We also want parliament to institute disciplinary action and calling for his immediate suspension. That will make South Africans have confidence that our systems, both the executive and judiciary and the legislature have the same responsibility of condemning gender based violence.”
