The Inter-Ministerial Committee on State Funerals led by the Minister in the Presidency, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, has outlined plans for the official memorial service and the funeral of the late struggle stalwart Winnie Madikizela-Mandela.

Dlamini-Zuma says it’s all systems go for Wednesday’s memorial service scheduled to take place at Orlando Stadium at eleven in the morning.

She says there are a number of Heads of States and deputies they are expecting to attend the service.

“I said two Heads of States; that is the case, and there is a vice president; it’s the third one and there is a former head of state. And then there are some eminent persons who are expected. And we also expecting the SADC Executive Secretary and we also expect the Chairperson of the AU Commission.”

Meanwhile, the Inter-Ministerial Committee has distanced itself on the so called “ugly portraits” of Madikizela Mandela that have been making rounds on Social Media.

Committee member and Minister of Communications Nomvula Mokonyane says the artists who decide to honour Mama Winnie in the form of portraits must make sure that they consider the issue of sensitivity during this time.

Social Media has been reacting with anger to some of the drawings and portraits of Mama Winnie saying they undermine her struggle for freedom.

Nomvula Mokonyane says, “As to the quality, I think it’s something we can’t deal with because it is done by individuals. But we do encourage the sensitivity when it comes to doing the paintings of an individual. As for the ANC, we have used a picture of Mama when she was sworn in as a member of Parliament for the first time – that’s the one at the mural at the ANC headquarters at Luthuli House in Johannesburg.”
