It is all systems go for the May Day celebrations at Isaac Wolfson Stadium in Port Elizabeth on 1 May. President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to deliver the keynote address.

This year’s celebrations will be held under the theme ”Building unity and cohesion of Cosatu to advance the National Democratic Revolution”.

“We call all workers to come out in their numbers and we call on government to call May Day a non-trading holiday. We warn all those employers with a tendency to intimidate workers from attending May Day celebrations to refrain from such tendencies. We urge workers to approach Cosatu or our trade union offices if they are facing any kind of intimidation,” says Cosatu General Secretary, Bheki Ntshalintshali.

African National Congress Deputy Secretary General, Jessie Duarte, says the party will use the May Day celebrations for the 2019 general elections.

“The ANC is assisting with mobilisation throughout its branches through its zones, regions throughout the Nelson Mandela Metro but we might even go beyond that. So we have come here to work with the team that is organising and mobilising for this particular May Day celebrations. We urge all our ANC members to come out to the May Day rally.”
