All systems go for Cape Town Street Parade

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The first-ever theme song has been created for the Cape Town Street Parade, formerly known as the Tweede Nuwejaar Parade.

Kaapse Klopse Karnival Association director, Muneeb Gambeno, says local entertainment personality, Loukmaan Adams will perform the song.

Festivities are expected to get under way at midday on Monday with live entertainment.

The organisers  have encouraged people to come through as early as possible to ensure that they get a good spot to view Minstrel troupes make their way past City Hall.

The annual event is an integral part of Cape culture. It draws thousands of spectators every year.  Gambeno says about 60 troupes are expected to participate in this year’s event.

“We start with the first troupe at 13:45. Try and come the city as early because there will be road closures; people are already camping out in the city. The prime viewing spots are around city hall, wale street, Adderley street and up in the Bo-Kaap; there’s a hub of excitement and vendors. There will also be vendors at Keizergracht and also the parade.”

Thousands of people are expected to line the streets. Gambeno hopes the song will be played throughout the year.
