Chad Le Clos

Swimming South Africa President Allan Fritz is confident that his code will at least get two medals at the Tokyo Olympics in Japan later this year.

Swimming SA will be relying on golden boy Chad Le Clos for medals after the legendary Cameron Van Der Burgh retired in 2018. SA managed to get three medals at the 2016 Rio Olympics in Brazil with Le Clos bagging two and Van Der Burgh earning the last medal.

SA athletes are still to qualify for the Olympics although some have already achieved FINA (International Swimming Federation) qualifying times. Fritz says the athletes will qualify at the SA National Swimming Championships in April in Durban.

Fritz also says the preparations in the last two years have not gone particularly well. He highlighted the lack of funds as the reason for hampering their plans.

SA won 10 medals overall at the Rio Olympics with 2 gold, six silver and two bronze medals. Fritz is confident Team SA will get no less than six medals in Tokyo. – Report by Vincent Sitsula
