Suspects in Babita Deokaran murder case denied bail

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The six men accused of the murder of whistle-blower Babita Deokaran have been denied bail in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s court.

Deokaran was gunned down outside her Johannesburg home in what is believed to have been a hit in August this year. She was a witness in an investigation by the Special Investigations Unit into dodgy PPE contracts.  The six face charges of murder, conspiracy to commit murder, attempted murder and possession of firearms and ammunition.

Magistrate Simon Sibanyoni says the applicants, who all come from rural KwaZulu-Natal, do not have valid addresses and therefore they can not be traced if they are released on bail.

“It is clear that the interest of justice does not allow them to be released on bail of confessions, there is nothing to the exception that they have placed before this court,” says Sibanyoni.
