Suspected illegal miners arrested in Mahlakung village, Limpopo

The two suspected illegal chrome miners arrested in Mahlakung village outside the mining town of Burgersfort in Limpopo will also be charged with being in the country illegally.

Police spokesperson Malesela Ledwaba says several illegal miners evaded arrest.

Police have also seized mining equipment.

Ledwaba says the suspects will appear in court soon.

“Police were engaged, [there was] disruptive operations at Mahlakung village near Burgersfort, targeting illegal miners when they found a number of people conducting illegal mining activities. Upon noticing police, they immediately dispersed to different directions. Two suspects were arrested for illegal mining and for being illegal immigrants. During the arrest, police seized a number of illegal mining equipment,” adds Ledwaba.
