Suspect arrested for kidnapping after 50 Ethiopian nationals rescued in Lenasia, Johannesburg

A 49-year-old man has been arrested for kidnapping after 50 Ethiopian nationals were rescued from a house in Zacharia Park near Lenasia, south of Johannesburg.

It is alleged that the nationals, aged between 12 and 50, were brought into South Africa with the false hope of being reunited with their families.

Police spokesperson Brenda Muridili explains, “It is reported that these 50 people, were brought into South Africa to be reunited with their families living in the country but on arrival, the person who transported them demanded money from their families before their release. They are currently waiting to be processed by the Department of Home Affairs. Some of their families have been notified. The suspect will be appearing in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday.”
