Former Springbok player Thando Manana says Supersport should have waited for the outcome of the Equality Court case before deciding not to renew rugby analyst Ashwin Willemse’s contract.
Willemse stunned South Africa more than three months ago when he walked off the set during a live broadcast of a Super Rugby match, claiming that his colleagues Nick Mallett and Naas Botha had undermined and patronised him.
With race at the centre of the debate, it led to a media storm and an internal inquiry.
Mallett and Botha have since returned to the studio.
Manana said, “I’m not saying that they should have renewed or they should have stuck with him. They should have at least waited for the period to come to the conclusion and therefore make their feelings and recommendations on whether they will renew or not renew his contract. But they have done so with the Equality Court outcomes still not yet and the Human Rights Commission also still being in the process. I don’t know where he puts them at this moment.”
