Sundowns and Swallows to face off in top-of-the-table clash

Reading Time: 4 minutes

Matches are coming thick and fast in the 2020/21 DSTV Premiership campaign. There will be five matches on Saturday and two on Sunday.

In a top-of-the-table clash, log leaders and defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns will host second-placed Swallows FC at the Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville on Saturday.

A mouth-watering affair is expected at the Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville on Saturday.

Top flight returnees, Swallows FC, are travelling to Pretoria for their clash against Mamelodi Sundowns. These are two of the three unbeaten teams in the league, so far this season.

What makes it more interesting is the fact that they are number one and two on the standings respectively, with 26 points each from their 12 encounters.

Sundowns’ co-coach, Rulani Mokwena says they always play to win.

“Another one of 30, just another one of 30. And it is a game that we have to win, every game Sundowns plays to win. We are a little bit thin at the moment with regards to the defensive line. Medically, we are without Ricardo Nascimento, Lyle Lakay, Bangaly Somahoro, and for medical reasons, we are without Mudau. It leaves us very thin. We were dealt a huge blow by losing Brian Onyango with a grade 2 thigh injury,” says Mokwena.

At 15:30 on Saturday, Black Leopards will be at home against Chippa United. Besides the scorching heat in Thohoyandou, the visitors should have every reason to be wary of Lidoda Duvha, who recently beat Orlando Pirates 2-NIL at the Thohoyandou stadium. The home side will also be counting on former Chippa United coach, Lehlohonolo Seema, who has since been roped in as an assistant to coach Dylan Kerr.

However, Chippa’s Kurt Lentjies says they have been working hard and are looking forward to the match.

“What we worked on in the past couple of games must come to the fore now. We are playing five away games in a row which is will always be difficult with travelling and so on but we are positive. We are looking forward to the next challenge against Leopards,” says Lentjies.

There will be three matches at five o’clock on Saturday. Stellenbosch FC is at home against Kaizer Chiefs, Amazulu travel to Baroka FC, and Maritzburg United will play against Orlando Pirates at the Harry Gwala stadium in Pietermaritzburg. After a poor start to the season, Amakhosi have rediscovered their mojo. They have won their last three league matches.

Chiefs’ fullback, Philani Zulu, says they had to dig deep to move away from the bottom of the standings.

“To move away from the bottom of the log is a good relief. We had to dig deep and it paid off very well. We are trying our best. It’s not going to be easy but the harder we work, it will be worth it in the end. We just have to make sure that we are mentally and physically fit for the following game. Each and every game is just as important,” says

On Sunday, Supersport United visit Tshakuma Tsha Madzivhandila at the Thohoyandou Stadium, while Cape Town City and Golden Arrows will clash at the Cape Town Stadium.
