Sundowns’ Modiba says the DSTV Premiership is not a one-team league ahead of their Kaizer Chiefs clash

Reading Time: 4 minutes

Mamelodi Sundowns winger, Aubrey Modiba disagrees that the DSTV Premiership is a one-team league. Sundowns confirmed their dominance in local football after they clinched their fifth straight league title with four games remaining.

Having already wrapped up the title, their aim now is to win at least all their remaining games to finish with a better points tally than last season.

Sundowns have now won 12 league titles in the PSL era, and look to continue with their dominance for years to come.

Mamelodi Sundowns are on the brink of winning a treble in South African football, having already clinched two trophies this season. Having already won everything on offer locally, Sundown’s main aim now is to dominate continental football. They are pushing hard to win their second CAF Champions League title something they failed to achieve this season.

Modiba, who has already won two league titles with Mamelodi Sundowns after joining from their Tshwane cross-town rivals SuperSport United, says winning the title is never easy.

Modiba says their consistent performance as a club makes them be head and shoulders above the rest.

“Every team that we play we make sure that you know we do the basics right, we do what is required, and use our strengths so that we can be able to win the game. I don’t think it’s a one team league or something like that, but I think our work has been very good. We’ve been doing well, and yeah, it hasn’t been easy. I don’t wanna lie, every game is tough. I wouldn’t say it’s a one-team league.”

Sundowns will visit bitter rivals Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium on Sunday. But Chiefs are hoping to build on their midweek result after narrowly beating Marumo Gallants, after a string of poor results.

Chiefs forward Keegan Dolly says their confidence as players has been boosted ahead of the clash against his former club.

“I think it was really important for the whole club, you know, the supporters and us as players, you know just to bring that spirit back and that winning mentality. I think everyone knows that for the past few weeks, it’s been a bit rough for us. It’s been tough for us as players. I don’t think there’s a player that wants to go on the field and lose the game and I think with the fighting spirit we showed on Tuesday, it can just give us the confidence going forward and we can improve on our performances going forward. For me, there are no emotions. I don’t think for anyone else. I don’t think there should be emotions involved in a game. You know, for us it’s a normal game. We should focus on ourselves and try to win.”

The race to avoid relegation from the DSTV Premiership has also intensified. Any of the seven bottom teams can still be relegated from South Africa’s top-flight football.

Bottom of the log Baroka FC eased their relegation worries when they beat Golden Arrows midweek.

Baroka stand-in coach Vincent Kobola says they will go all out to win their three remaining matches the save the status of the club.

They visit 12th placed Chippa United this weekend.

“For us, every game is a cup final now. For us to survive, we need to win all four games and now Arrows is done. I told the players that they can celebrate, but tomorrow it’s back to work. I’m looking forward to the Chippa game. It’s not going to be an easy one, especially playing away from home, and also you know, Chippa is struggling at home, but you’ll never know, they can surprise you. But we are prepared. We really wanna fight hard and make the team survive this relegation.”

Maritzburg United also eased their relegation worries when they beat the high-flying Royal AM in the KwaZulu-Natal derby on Wednesday.

Maritzburg and Chippa have both collected the same number of points, and Maritzburg coach, Ernst Middendorp says his players have proved that they have the potential to avoid the chop come the end of the season.

“We need to win; we need to pick up these points going into the next two games. We are aware of it; we are really prepared to suffer and to support each other and to show these collective that you have seen today we can make the points, and we can make the points … really, in the end, to be in a comfortable position in the PSL.”

In other matches this weekend, Marumo Gallants will host Golden Arrows, Amazulu FC will be at home to Sekhukhune United, and TS Galaxy who are also not safe from relegation will visit third-placed Cape Town City.
