The community is protesting over alleged nepotism by the municipality and other issues.

Fresh unrest has broken out at Mlungisi Township at Stutterheim in the Eastern Cape.

State vehicles have been stoned, looting of shops and it’s alleged that another municipal building has been set alight in the township.

On Tuesday, residents torched the main municipal building in Stutterheim as well as a clinic.

They are protesting over alleged nepotism by the municipality and other issues.

The situation is getting out of control and angry protestors have pelted police vehicles with stones.

Some police officials have sustained injuries.

A police helicopter has been deployed and is monitoring the situation.

ANC provincial spokesperson Gift Ngqondi has called on law enforcement agencies to arrest the perpetrators.

He says: “The ANC supports the constitutional right of people to protest and further supports the rights of citizens to organise and protest around their rights. However people should not violate the rights of others or engage in the destruction of property. In our belief two wrongs do not make any right. This bad behaviour is unacceptable.”
