Liberation struggle icon, Nomathemba Sidandala, has been laid to rest in Komani, in the Eastern Cape.

The 79-year-old was honoured with a category 2 special official provincial funeral.

Mama Sidandala joined the liberation struggle in 1968. On the second of two occasions, she spent three years in prison without a trial under apartheid laws.

Upon her release in 1989, she turned her attention to establishing preschools; as well as youth and women empowerment projects.

Sidandala was revered for her compassion.

She is survived by her two children and grandchildren.
