The South African-born musician, saxophonist and composer Steve Dyer will kick start the 2018 edition of the Soweto Jazz Explosion series at the Cape Gate MIAGI centre for music in Jabavu Soweto next weekend.
He is not only one of Southern Africa’s most devoted scholars and disciples of indigenous African music, but a globally accomplished jazz musician and producer too.
Dyer says the Jazz explosion will be bringing a Jazz project he initiated called “Mantswe a Marabi” which will be honouring the Marabi tradition.
“I’ve played with some young musicians and they do a lot of great things, but sometimes we as older people take for granted what they know about the tradition, hence Mantswe a Marabi was born.”
