Steve Biko Hospital refutes claims of collapse

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Management at Steve Biko Academic Hospital in Pretoria refuted reports and claims that its oncology and cancer treatment wards are collapsing.

A team from the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC), led by Commissioner Biani Jones toured the facilities on Morning morning.

Hospital Chief Executive Officer Dr Mathabo Mathebula conceded two of four radiation machines had to be switched off last year due to faulty air conditioning.

Mathebula says the medical facility is offering more than one type of cancer treatment including chemotherapy and nuclear medical treatment.

The SAHRC delegation says it will release its final report within three months.

Meanwhile, Jones says the team is happy with the special service offered to patients and what they have seen during the investigation tour at the hospital.
