SterKinekor cancels Inxeba screening

Reading Time: < 1 minute

SterKinekor has cancelled the screening of the acclaimed South African film, Inxeba, or The Wound, at all its cinemas in Cape Town.

This is due to threats of protest action on social media.

NuMetro postponed screening the film at cinemas in Port Elizabeth and Cape Town on Friday, while it was also withdrawn at a complex in East London after a protest by about 30 people led by Xhosa traditional leaders.

The movie deals with a Xhosa initiation school in the Eastern Cape.

Protestors say it ridicules the ritual custom of initiation and refers to Jesus and Shaka Zulu as having been gay.

Inxeba has won 19 international awards and was in the running for an Oscar award but missed nomination.
