Stellenbosch FC back on top of NFD with 2 games remaining

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Stellenbosch FC returned to the summit of the National First Division on Wednesday when they beat Nedbank Cup finalists TS Galaxy 2-1 at the Idas Valley Stadium.

Iqraam Rayners took his goal tally for the season to 19 and he scored a first half brace to give Stellenbosch a good early lead.

Tshegofatso Nyama pulled one back for Dan Malesela’s side, but Stellenbosch FC were able to hold out for the win that takes them 2 points clear at the top of the table, with two rounds of action remaining.

Stellenbosch Coach Steve Barker says it was a good win and was great to go back top in front of the home fans in a televised game.

After having played 120 minutes in a cup game on the weekend, Barker admits he was surprised how Galaxy kept coming at them.

Barker says credit must go to their top scorer Reiners who has been in great form for the past two years.

Galaxy Coach Dan Malesela says their approach in the first half was not good and it allowed Stellenbosch.

While they have nothing but pride to play for in the league, Malesela wants his team to get in a winning habit before they take on Kaizer Chiefs in the Nedbank Cup final next month. -Reporting by Rob Delport
