Steenhuisen calls for full disclosure from Ramaphosa at State Capture hearings

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Democratic Alliance (DA) leader John Steenhuisen says President Cyril Ramaphosa must fully disclose what role he played in making important decisions that had been discussed in cabinet meetings when he appears before the Commission of Inquiry into State Capture.

Steenhuisen and Gauteng DA leader Solly Msimanga are attending the hearings on Wednesday.

When he appeared in April, Ramaphosa had conceded that the ANC had not done enough to tackle state capture, cadre deployment and discipline among Members of Parliament.

Steenhuisen says  Ramaphosa was among the decision-makers.

“I hope that he’s gonna make full disclosure on what was discussed in those cabinet meetings. But also if he put up any opposition to any of the appointments that were devastating decisions that were made by the government at that time. He was part of those nine wasted years as he termed them as Deputy President –  both for the country and his party.  I think that he’s gotta make some disclosure about what he knew when he knew it and what he did about it.’ says Steenhuisen.

Meanwhile, Political analyst Ralph Mathekga says Ramaphosa will have to explain why some decisions were made when he was Deputy President.

“Some controversial decisions have been made in government that need to be explained in relation to state-owned entities, Eskom. The purchasing and procurement of coal –  those are decisions that actually happened at the time when he was in charge of government business relating to questions relating to Eskom, the power challenges we are confronted with in government. So, I think he is going to face very specific questions relating to how much he knew, what did he make of what he knew and what did he make of some of the decisions that were made in government at the time,” says Mathekga.
