The state says it will oppose bail in the case of Pogisho Shuping who is accused of robbing the Northern Cape’s Tsineng police station of firearms and ammunition.

The 41-year-old suspect appeared briefly in the Kuruman Magistrate’s Court on Thursday following his arrest on Tuesday.

He will be back in court on Tuesday next week.

The Hawks have launched a manhunt for two other suspects.

A reward of R50 000 has been offered to anyone who can assist with information leading to the arrest of the remaining suspects.

Provincial Hawks spokesperson Nomthandazo Mnisi says, “Pogisho Benedict Shuping, who was arrested in connection with Tsineng police station robbery, appeared earlier on Friday morning in Kuruman Magistrate’s Court and he is in custody. The case has been postponed to August 11 for a legal representative and for a formal bail application.”

Last week, the Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (Popcru)  condemned the robbery incident.

The union says similar incidents have recently taken place in Mpumalanga and the Eastern Cape.

Popcru spokesperson Richard Mamabolo says police stations in rural areas are under-resourced.
