Reading Time: 2 minutes

The cost of this year’s opening of Parliament will be R6.8 million rand. The event, taking place on Thursday evening, is one of the most important on Parliament’s calender. Public participation is a big part of proceedings. There will be a junior guard of honour, a civil guard of honour and eminent persons. As always, the outfits of MP’s will once again be a highlight of the day. Former President Thabo Mbeki is one of the guests that have confirmed that he will attend the 2013 opening of Parliament. This is however pending his responsibilities elsewhere on the continent. Former deputy Presidents, FW de Klerk, Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka and Baleka Mbete will also attend. The opening will cost R6.8 million . According to the Secretary to the National Assembly, Kamal Mansura, there are a few expenses. “ The cost drivers on the 6.8 million is a lot to do with our communication, you must have seen the banners as you drive around, cost involved in banners, posters, advertising the State of the Nation Address, getting the people involved in the SONA. The security, transport – ground and air and dinner costs at the CTICC.”
According to the Speaker of the National Assembly, Max Sisulu, there will be enough funds for Parliament to do its work.“ We will make money available for the work of parliament and that might mean that we have to cut costs elsewhere….like cutting on overseas trips…to reduce that. but will make sure that parliament has funds available for committees to do their work,” says Sisulu. The theme of SONA is Socio economic development through oversight and public participation. Chairperson of the National Council of Provinces, Mninwa Mahlangu, Parliament wants to be closer involved in development. “ Almost 20 years in government, we would want to see these things as fast as possible and make sure that Parliament plays a very strong oversight over socio economic issues and public participation. Not only by MPs but also civil society,” says Mahlangu.
