Springboks go down 23-18 to Australia

Reading Time: 2 minutes

South Africa’s national rugby team have suffered their second successive defeat in the Rugby Championship.

The Springboks lost 23-18 to Australia at the Sun Corp Stadium in Brisbane.

The Wallabies were quick out of the blocks at the Sun Corp Stadium, led by their captain Michael Hooper with a try inside the first two minutes.

It didn’t take too long before the Springboks responded with five points of their own as Bongi Mbonambi scored from a good line-out.

South Africa displayed some patience with ball in hand, which they severely lacked against Argentina two weeks ago, adding another five points as Makazola Mapimpi charged across the line after a clever pass from scrum-half Faf de Klerk.

But the tourists squandered that advantage with a defensive blunder that handed the Australians their second try.

The Springboks managed to retain the lead at half-time albeit by just one point, 18-17.

It was a much closer but scrappier contest in the second half with little separating the two sides as both teams were plagued by handling errors.

The only difference was the two penalties off the boot of Matt Toomua that put the Wallabies five points ahead.

And that’s how it stayed as the South Africans’ lack of discipline and their inability to convert their chances gifted the Australians their first win of the tournament.

The win sees the Wallabies finally end their four match losing streak while the Springboks dismal record on tour continues.
