“Speed cameras must be visible”

The City of Cape Town has hit back at recent reports that speed cameras are often hidden or disguised as road side electricity boxes.

The City of Cape Town’s traffic and speed camera report has recommended that officers and camera’s be clearly visable and that the fine system not be used as a cash-cow.

Mayoral Committee member for Safety JP Smith says City laws do not allow for speed cameras to be hidden.

“Speed cameras should not be hidden in terms of the city policy and the policy was re-affirmed by the portfolio commitee.

“Cameras should be visibly displayed and if the public observe it being otherwise, they are free to alert us so that we can engage the staff,” he adds.
