A special provincial official funeral has been declared in Mpumalanga for the late veteran photographer, Sam Nzima on Saturday, May 26.

All national flags will be flown at half-mast in the province.

President Cyril Ramaphosa says the veteran photographer will be remembered for his significant contribution he made through photojournalism during the struggle against apartheid.

The respected photographer, who captured the famous picture of Hector Peterson during the 1976 Soweto uprising, died last Saturday in Mbombela.

Ramaphosa says the country will mourn and respect Nzima as he passages through to his ancestors.

“He was an iconic photographer; he is the one who placed the suffering of our people during the Soweto uprisings on the world’s map, through the photograph that he took of Hector Peterson being held and dying in the arms of Mbuyi. It was clear that South Africa had reached a point of total oppression against its own people.”
