Soweto artist pays tribute to Madikizela-Mandela

Reading Time: 2 minutes

A Soweto artist paid tribute to the late Winnie Madikizela-Mandela by painting her picture using smoke from a burning candle.

Anathi Nkanyuza says this is a celebration of Mama Winnie’s life.

Creating art and using technology to assist, Anathi uses flames to leave scorch marks on canvas.

He captures and studies photographs to refine his work, then uses an eraser to remove the scorch marks and creating a piece of art.

His latest project is the canvas of the late Mother of the Nation, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela.

“The late Mama Winnie Madikizela-Mandela picture is to commemorate her and celebration of her life as well.”

Quite nervous when he started his new project, Nkanyuza relied on Mam Winnie’s popularity to assist.

“I was quite nervous about it at first since it’s my first time drawing Mama Winnie, but she’s quite like a recognizable face. So, it wasn’t much of a challenge. It’s a popular person. So, I’ve seen her face quite a number of times.”

The artist says Mama Winnie was very inspirational and touched many lives.

“The reason why I created it actually, like is just in commemoration of her life and all the work that she’s done for the country, in fighting for our freedom, the freedom that we have now as the youth of South Africa.”

The late Winnie Madikizela-Mandela will be laid to rest on Saturday.
