South Africans joined thousands across the globe in marches to highlight their discontent with climate change. The event themed “Moving Planet” was organised by Greenpeace affiliated organisation 350-dot-org. 170 countries participate in the event annually. –> The event was aimed at highlighting the need for South Africa to adopt a more environmentally friendly approach to generating energy. Demonstrators also decried damaging practices like driving cars and cutting down trees.

The marches come just weeks before Durban hosts the Convention on Climate Change in November.

In Pretoria, volunteers urged people to sign petitions in support of bio-fuels. “The significance of today is to try and get our governments around the world to appreciate the importance of us moving away from fossil fuels and to go as renewable as possible,” says the 350-dot-org, Louis Du Plessis. –> While in Cape Town, hundreds of eco activists joined in the 350-dot-org march. “We need to start to understand that what we do affects somebody else on the other side, everything we do and everything we do to change makes a difference,” says 350-dot-org’s, Andrea Van Meygarden. The marches come just weeks before Durban hosts the Convention on Climate Change in November.
