Ahead of the national elections in South Africa, thousands of citizens living abroad are actively participating in a two-day voter registration program spanning over 100 countries. The initiative aims to ensure expats can exercise their democratic right to vote.

President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to announce the election date soon.

Independent Electoral Commission CEO Sy Mamabolo noted varying levels of activity across different countries, acknowledging both progress and challenges encountered during the registration process.

As the program concludes, attention shifts to collating data to assess participation rates and overall effectiveness.

Mamabolo says, “The report we received yesterday is that there were missions at which things were moving slowly, such as Dubai and then in the UK there was a bit of some activity. So, when we conclude the process this afternoon we should be able to do the collation of figures, we can then make an assessment of how well the process has gone.”
