South African teacher in South Korea tested positive for coronavirus

Health Minister Zweli Mkhize says government is following up with South Korean authorities about a South African teacher, who has tested positive for coronavirus (COVID-19) in the city of Daegu.

The 39-year-old man was due to return to South Africa but has since remained in South Korea.

Mkhize has reiterated his call for calm and cooperation from the public and the media to ensure that the privacy of patients and their families are respected.

“We’ve also received a report from our embassy in South Korea that one South African, a 39 year old who’s a teacher was working in the town of Daegu and has also tested positive for the coronavirus.”

“We waiting to get more details but he’s still out in Korea in that particular area there’s been a rapid increase in the numbers of people who have got coronavirus, I think the latest was over 7000.”

Earlier, it was reported that Gauteng woman tested positive for the coronavirus.

Health Minister confirmed the 39-year old woman had direct contact with the man from Hilton in KwaZulu-Natal, who also tested positive for coronavirus.

Both returned to South Africa on March 1.

The KwaZulu-Natal man has been quarantined in Grey’s Hospital in Pietermaritzburg, where he is responding well to treatment.
