The South African and Eastern Province rugby fraternities are in mourning after the death of Silas Nkanunu.
He was an administrative stalwart in the province and also the first black president of the then South African Rugby Union.
Nkanunu was elected in 1998, succeeding the controversial Louis Luyt.

Nkanunu was also a human rights lawyer and played a central role in rugby transformation in the country. He died after a long illness.
“He transformed rugby and he was a great man. A disciplined and dedicated rugby administrator. Our hearts at moment are very saddened by his death and so are many South African who knew him well. His living behind a living legacy. His footprints are there for one to see. We very much sad, a giant has fallen amongst rugby administrators,” says former Springbok Manager, Zola Yeye.
