Reading Time: < 1 minute

A South African music composer will leave for China at the end of November to take part in the 2018 Jinji Lake International Composition Competition in Suzhou, China.

He is the only African composer to take part in this competition.

Asman won the SAMRO overseas scholarship for composers. He was chosen out of 142 applicants from 39 countries around the world.

Asman says this is an opportunity for him to learn. “I feel very excited and nervous. This is probably the biggest competition I have coming up so far. It’s always an experience to work with an orchestra and I’m excited to meet the other finalists. There’s one from the US and the other 3 are from China. So it’s going to be a diverse sets of compositions. I think I’m going to be learning a lot as well.”

The SAMRO overseas scholarship is a competition that is held every four years for composers, singers and instrumentalists.

The categories for the competition are Jazz or Western Art Music; and the winners receive a scholarship to further their studies in music overseas.
