South Africa records 92 more COVID-19 related deaths on Friday

At least 92 more people have succumbed to COVID-19 related complications in South Africa on Friday. This takes the overall death toll up to 53 663 deaths.

“Eastern Cape 14, Free State 3, Gauteng 12, Kwa-Zulu Natal 3, Limpopo 0, Mpumalanga 2, North West 52, Northern Cape 5 and Western Cape 1,” according to the Health Ministry Department.

According to the Department of Health, 1 424 new cases were reported in the last 24 hours, bringing the cumulative number of COVID-19 cases to 1 564 355.

The recoveries stand at 1 488 572, representing a recovery rate of 95%.

EVDS launched 

Earlier on Friday, Health Minister Zweli Mkhize launched the COVID-19 Electronic Vaccination Data System for people who are aged 60 and above. Those who are eligible to receive the vaccine include essential workers, persons in congregate settings, those over 18 with comorbidities.

The launch forms part of the Health Department’s preparations for the second phase of the vaccination roll-out programme. It will run from the 17th of next month.
