The Congress of the People (COPE) Member of Parliament, Pakes Dikgetsi says South Africa needs a fresh start, because majority of the people are still living in poverty 25-years into democracy.

Dikgetsi who is also the party’s Premier Candidate in the Northern Cape was speaking at the party’s Freedom Day celebrations event, held in Galeshewe town in Kimberley today.

Dikgetsi says the majority of South Africans are not free.

He says 25 years into democracy, many people are still living in abject poverty.

Dikgetsi says, many people are unemployed, and some don’t have houses.

“Our democracy was actually hijacked for various reasons. Our democracy was taken in the wrong direction and we see now what the reports are in the Zondo commission and the fact that many people have lost their confidence in the institutions of our state purely because they see they not working for them. Because the government that was entrusted with the responsibility of ensuring a functional democracy was very negligent”.

Dikgetsi says the country needs good leadership.

“Its starts with a proper leadership, leadership that is focused on serving the people and not leadership that is there for self-serving reasons. It needs leadership that will be compliant to the constitution and the rule of law.”

COPE member Rob Fisher, welcomed their party message.

“COPE have realised that the truckers of South Africa are the hard bit of the economy and without them obvious they can take a knock. ”

COPE has encouraged people to vote for a responsible government who will give them a fresh start.
