Captain Siya Kolisi has told a media conference that the Springboks just wanted the win more than England.
He says South Africa needed some good news.
“We won because we definitely wanted it, I know they also wanted it a lot but I must say the people outside here and the people inside here did help us a lot.”
“It gave us another reason to fight even harder because we knew what was going on back at home and I think the coach reminded us that we have a privilege of doing what we doing and that can give a little bit of hope to the people. It did drive us seeing all the videos in the malls, in taverns and every single person in the street celebrating. So we knew it was much more than just for our personal gain, it was for the country.”
Crowds at the OR Tambo International Airport erupted into joyous celebration as Kolisi lifted the Webb Ellis Cup as he entered through the doors at arrivals.
Kolisi’s comments come after their 32-12 victory over England at Yokohama, Japan.
