Reading Time: 2 minutes

Mpumalanga Premier David Mabuza says the high rate of unemployment highlights the relationship between the low levels of education and inadequate skills.

Mabuza was delivering the state of the Province address in the Provincial Legislature.

He says they have prioritised skills development as a pillar for development. He says the fight against unemployment amongst the youth cannot be separated from a comprehensive programme of education and skills development.

His Eastern Cape counterpart, Phumulo Masualle has cited infrastructure development, agricultural development and strengthening of basic services as main catalysts for change in improving the outlook of the province.

Masualle was delivering the State of the Province address in the Bhisho Legislature. The province is also focusing on planting 55-thousand hectares of grain that will yield 193-thousand tons in production.

Masualle says there are plans to spend five-billion rands between 2019 and 2022 on roads.

“The province is almost like a construction site because whichever direction you go there are major works to improve our road infrastructure. The collaboration with SANRAL, the work we do as the Department of Roads and Public orks as the case is for now, the road upgrades that are being performed by the province including the pipeline going forward of further roads we will be attending to.”

Meanwhile, Limpopo premier Stan Mathabatha has paid tribute to a prolific female writer Aletta Motimele  and the provincial SACP head, Teenage Monama.

Motimele and Monama both died after short illnesses last week.

Premier Mathabatha has paid condolences to the bereaved families during his state of the province address in Polokwane.

“Last Saturday, we laid to rest the mortal remains of one the finest literary giants this province and the country have ever seen. Mme Aletta Matshidiso Motimele left us after a short illness. On Sunday we woke up to the sad news of the passing on of Comrade Teenage Monama. As a soldier of uMkhonto we Sizwe, Monama played a major role in the fight for freedom and democracy in our country. He passes on at a time when people of his calibre are needed to help reconstruct and develop our country.”
