Some ANC members in Sekhukhune District obtain interdict against appointment of new mayor

Reading Time: 2 minutes

A group of African National Congress (ANC) members in the Sekhukhune District have obtained an urgent High Court interdict in Polokwane in Limpopo to stop the appointment of the executive mayor.

The applicant, Isaiah Mahlangu, and four others want the ANC to stop the appointment of former mayor Stan Ramaila, arguing that he was not on the list of the mayoral candidates.

The preferred nominees were Julia Mathebe, Maleke Mokganyetsi and David Chego.

In an urgent court interdict, a group of ANC members want the appointment of Ramaila to be reversed.

They argue that the rights of those democratically elected are threatened.

They also say that the appointment of Ramaila may affect the organisation and that it makes the executive committees above the law.

It is not clear if the Sekhukhune District Municipality council sitting will go ahead as planned.

The ANC and the district municipality are yet to comment.

Corruption allegations

The Sekhukhune District Municipality has been plagued by corruption allegations.

In a supply chain scandal in July lasy year, several of its employees came under investigation after eight companies were irregularly awarded contacts worth R26 million.

According to an internal memo that was in the possession of the SABC, the service providers were given appointment letters for COVID-19 related water and sanitation projects.
