The Sol Plaatje municipality in Kimberley in the Northern Cape has decided to reinstate its suspended municipal manager and Chief Financial Officer.

They have been on suspension since the Kimberley shutdown protests in 2018 and the report commissioned by the provincial Department of Cooperative governance.

The report focused on financial irregularities and wasteful expenditure. Municipal manager Goolam Akharwaray and CFO Lydia Mahloko were successful earlier this week in interdicting the report.

Sol Plaatje Mayor Patrick Mabilo says the city’s highest-ranking officials will return to work next week.

“Council has noted the high court ruling, dated Monday the 16th August 2016. Today at a special council meeting, a special council resolved that the executive mayor, Patrick Mabilo should notify the two officials to report for duty in their respective and original positions on Monday the 23 August. This brings the matter to closure,” says Mabilo.
