Two former leading soccer players have called on South Africa to invest more on the development of sports at grassroots level. Doctor Khumalo and Helman Mkhalele are in uPhongolo, northern KwaZulu-Natal to scout for budding soccer stars.

The Mayoral Cup is held annually to identify and develop young sports people.

Teams from different wards were up against each other, for the most coveted award. Local players we so inspired, more so that they were playing in front of two of their favourite players of all time Khumalo and Mkhalele.

“We just want to make sure that we are on the same track with international standards. So we can get the best out of them,” said Khumalo.

Other sporting codes such as karate, athletics and netball also featured prominently and locals turned out in their numbers to support the initiative.

The event was punctuated with other performances including the highly entertaining soccer free stylists.
