Thick snow has covered some mountains and roads in parts of Ceres, Worcester, and the Hex River Valley in the Western Cape.

The Theronsberg Pass between Ceres and Touwsrivier has been closed due to heavy snowfall. The owner of the Matroosberg nature reserve near Ceres, Didi de Kock, says ground-level snow is still covering their area.

She says it is however not a good day for hiking, because the weather is still bad. De Kock says she has a magnificent view of the white landscape from her office.

“There is snow up in the tar road coming into Matroosberg so people coming into Ceres to see snow will definitely not be disappointed 4×4 trail is not opened to the top yet because of thick snow but if it is snow that you are coming for that is what we will provide.”

Eastern Cape pass also closed

The R61 at the Wapadsberg Pass between Graaff Reinet and Cradock in the Eastern Cape has been closed due to intermittent snowfall.

Provincial Transport spokesperson Unathi Binqose has appealed to motorists to exercise caution when approaching that area and to consider alternative routes.

Binqose says they are also monitoring other high laying areas, especially mountain passes, across the province. – Additional reporting Olwethu Matsipane
