Steyn on Graeme Smith’s withdrawal from cricket’s top job

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Fast bowler Dale Steyn admits that having Graeme Smith as South Africa’s Director of Cricket would have been nice, but the legendary Proteas paceman insists that the former captain’s withdrawal from the race is not the end of the world.

Smith was in the running to become the first full-time appointment to the new position, before he announced his withdrawal last week, citing administrative issues within Cricket South Africa (CSA) for his decision.

Steyn does not believe the problems in the sport are as big as they are being made out to be and believes the country has the players to help it return to its former glory.

The 36-year-old said his former skipper would have been a good appointment for CSA in their new structure, but believes the Proteas have what it takes to soldier on even after Smith’s move to back down last week.

Steyn, meanwhile, is showing little sign of letting up as one of the world’s premier fast bowlers. Having retired from Test cricket, he is still available for SA in the limited overs formats.

The Phalaborwa-born ace has continued to prove his worth in MSL 2.0 where he is leading the attack for the log-leading Blitz.

He claimed two for 23 for the Cape Town Blitz in their latest Mzansi Super League (MSL) assignment against Durban Heat on Sunday.

Steyn is part of a potent attack that includes Pakistan quick Wahab Riaz, Anrich Nortje and Sisanda Magala. He says he is enjoying the experience and learning from other members of the Cape team’s attack.

You can catch Dale Steyn and the Cape Town Blitz when they travel to Port Elizabeth for their top-of-the-table clash against Nelson Mandela Bay Giants on Wednesday.

As with all the matches in MSL 2.0, the clash will be broadcast live on SABC. – Report by Thahir Asmal
