President of the ANC’s Veterans League, Snuki Zikalala, says the late former Cabinet Minister Zola Skweyiya strived for a united ANC and South Africa until his passing. Skweyiya died last week at the age of 75.

Zikalala was speaking at a memorial service in Pretoria for Skweyiya, which is being attended by scores of government officials and senior members of the ANC.

Skweyiya has been hailed as a person of integrity and dignity.

He served as Public Service and Administration Minister from 1994 to 1999 under former President Nelson Mandela, and then as Social Development Minister from 1999 to 2009 during former President Mbeki’s administration.

He amongst others championed the adoption of government’s Batho Pele (People First) principles as well the establishment of social security agency SASSA.

ANC stalwart Mavuso Msimang described Skweyiya as a selfless public servant.
