Sixteen injured in Joburg taxi crash

Sixteen people have been injured after the minibus taxi they were travelling in overturned on the R59 near Swartkoppies Road, south of Johannesburg.

It’s unclear what caused the crash which took place Tuesday morning.

ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring says, “Paramedics assessed the patients and found that two had sustained critical injuries while 14 others sustained minor to moderate injuries. Fortunately no fatalities were found on scene. Paramedics treated the patients and provided the two critically injured with advanced life support interventions. Once treated the two critically treated patients were taken to Baragwanath hospital, while the rest were taken to various provincial hospitals.”

Meanwhile, two people were shot and injured at the East Rand Mall Taxi Rank in Boksburg Monday night during an accidental discharge of a handgun.

It’s understood that two commuters who were inside a taxi were shot after a handgun was accidentally fired by one of the occupants in the vehicle.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Nick Dollman says, “Paramedics responded to a shooting at the Eastrand mall in Boksburg.

Paramedics from Netcare and the provincial ambulances attended to two patients at the scene. One man had been shot in the leg and a female had sustained a less serious injuries to her abdomen. The patients were stabilised at the scene before being taken to hospital for further treatment and care.

The incident and preceding events are being investigated by the SAPS who were at the scene.
