SIU hopes to conclude PPE probe by August

The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) says they hope to have concluded their probe into alleged multi-billion rand personal protective equipment (PPE) corruption in the country by the end of August.

The SIU says it is probing about R40 billion worth of contracts mostly in Gauteng, Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal.

SIU spokesperson, Kaizer Kganyago says the investigation is wide-ranging.

“Some of these cases are complicated. We are working together very well with the Financial Intelligence Center who is assisting us a lot in getting those bank accounts and making sure that where there is money or ill-gotten gains in people’s accounts. Because they [suspects] go all their way to hide the money under this.”

“They put [the funds under] children and relatives and so on and we have to go through all those and make sure that we find the money,” explains Kganyago.

Earlier in 2021, President Cyril Ramaphosa signed a proclamation authorising the Special Investigating Unit to investigate allegations of corruption, malpractice and maladministration in the North West Department of Public Works and Roads.

The proclamation authorises the SIU to investigate transactions that took place between January 2016 and March 2021.

Meanwhile, in February, North West Premier Job Mokgoro said his administration will establish a provincial forensic investigation unit to probe allegations of fraud, corruption, and maladministration within government departments and municipalities.
