SIU anticipates more information over Digital Vibes saga

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) says it anticipates more information and allegations into the Digital Vibes saga.

This after President Cyril Ramaphosa authorised the publication of the final report into the matter on Wednesday morning.

The SIU’s report into the multimillion-rand Digital Vibes COVID-19 communication contract has revealed damning findings against former Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize, his family and close associates.

The company, owned by Mkhize’s associates, was awarded R150 million to provide COVID-19 related communication services last year.

SIU spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago says, “We should look at the fact that the whole contract was entered into irregularly. Obviously if you look at the report, you will see the procurement process was not followed. We have done criminal referrals against the DDG, Mr [Anban] Pillay, because he was instrumental in making sure that the contract was done.”

“We can also say to the public that further to our report being given to the President, there is still more information coming our way in relation to Digital Vibes. We are continuing to look into all of those allegations coming our way,” adds Kganyago.

Meanwhile, the Presidency has called on government departments and state institutions to act on the recommendations made by the SIU report.

Acting Presidency spokesperson Tyrone Seale says, “I think what we expect is to see departments and institutions act on the referrals made by the SIU in all the places they have referred to. So it will be the case that people may still be in a position in the administration.”

“But this report contains referrals by the SIU of actions that should be taken against people with substantial evidence. So I think our expectations are that all departments will look at this report, the referrals and act on what the SIU is recommending,” says Seale.
