Situation remains tense in Riverlea protest

Reading Time: < 1 minute

At least 100 residents in Riverlea, West of Johannesburg, are protesting against the building of flats in their area.

They have blocked roads and burnt tyres leading into Extension 3. Residents are angry about the proposed development, claiming it will devalue their properties.

An angry community say, crime is escalating in their area and vagrants litter the streets at night.

Now with the introduction of a new building development, they are worried that the proposed housing project will bring down the value of their homes.

Community leader David Williams says: “The protest is about the development that is happening here in between our bonded houses, the local councillor wants to shove it down our throats that RDP flats must be built here, that is going to bring the value down, there was no public consultation to see if we were happy with this.”

The situation remains tense, police are keeping a close eye and the City of Joburg is yet to comment.
